PDUs are Professional Development Units and are necessary for maintaining Project Management Institute (PMI) certified credentials. With PMI’s certification requirements, PDUs are necessary and worth 1 hour of project management training. Some PMI credential holders however, can claim PDUs by visiting PMI’s website.

In order to maintain PMI credential however, you will need to accrue a certain number of PDUs within a three year timespan. This period starts immediately when you pass the exam and ends on the same date three years later.

Depending on the certification you want to achieve, these are the following PDU requirements:

  • PMP (Project Management Professional): 60 PDUs
  • PgMP (Program Management Professional): 60 PDUs
  • PMI-SP (Scheduling Professional): 30 PDUs in specialized area of project scheduling
  • PMI-RMP (Risk Management Professional): 30 PDUs in specialized area of project risk management.
  • CAPM (Certified Associate Project Manager): No PDUs needed, but CAPM is required to be renewed by retaking the CAPM exam at the end of a five year cycle.

In the event that you may earn more than the required amount of PDUs within the three-year period, you are able to transfer up to 20 PDUs of the last year of your current cycle to the next one. Conversely, if you do not earn the required amount of PDUs within your three-year cycle, your credential will expire. According to the PMP handbook, your credential will be suspended and you will not be permitted to refer to yourself as credential holder until the required PDUs have been earned. The time allotted to make up your overdue PDUs is up to one year and if you fail to do so, it will result in applying to retake your examination.

We can assist you in acquiring these credentials in order to become PMP qualified. We offer PDUs in the Virginia, Maryland, and DC areas. For more information on PDUs and their requirements, call Simpetopia at (571) 253-1455.
